A misty day and I would have thought it was an awful day to take photos – but now I understand so much more about light … I have realised that today was an amazing day to take photos … the mist adds atmosphere, acts as a giant soft box and really brings out the autumn colours – yes the sky is white and bland… but who needs to include lots of sky.
I took a few shots of the New Forest ponies enjoy the forest stream – and this was the best of a bad bunch. I was not paying enough attention to my shutter speed and 1/30sec was not really fast enough to cope with any movement the pony made. I had not considered that the water was adding light to the image and if I had pushed the ISO up to around 1000, I would have got sharper ponies.
The car park – I have included this as there were a group of walkers waiting to set off, and it helps with the scale of the woodland … this is part of the New Forest known as the Tall Tree Trail, where the tallest trees in the New Forest grow and with a number of marked routes is a great place for forest visitors to start exploring.
The mist creates a perfect backdrop as it merges with the trees beyond ans as light into the photographs helping to draw out the vibrant colours of autumn.
A slice through the trees – I think the pattern the trunks make with the autumn leaves in the foreground makes a dynamic piece – i could easily imagine that printed and hung on a wall, adding colour to a quiet space.
I used a wide aperture, shallow depth of field to capture the colour in the foreground and lead you through the trees,
The images above and below were taken in the Aboretum – this is a unique area of woodland within the New Forest with a mile long circular trail, and is a great place to capture a whole variety of autumn colours.
