Year Two (19) Coastal Sunsets

It was great to see Gavin Hoey share a video last weekend on creating sunsets in my home town – although the day he visited the sunset was somewhat lacking … but he offered a great reminder of how you can enhance them in Lightroom.

All these images were captured the same evening….

The sun is just beginning to change the colour to a golden haze, I spotted the person on the groyne which gives a great sense of scale to the image and captured the photo.

Moving around on the beach means that i can create different angles and different compositions, I have enhance the saturation on the golden tones, but the sun causes the highlights to be blown out.

This family was enjoying the wonderful skies, you can see the adult capturing the evening light on your phone – a silhouette which is very much the now moment that we are use to. I wanted to share with you the before short – straight out of camera and the editing that can be done to an image in Lightroom only to enhance the warmth of the image.

About 15 minutes later at a different beach and the sunset had changed totally in feeling and mode … I have enhanced the pink tones is this image to significantly warm it up – it also helps highlight how the light can change, and I lightened the shadows.

My final image looking out to see – this one lacks foreground interest but it does show just how much you can enhance the colour tones of an image and make the sunset more that what was there, just by moving the sliders around and adjusting the colour balance just as Gavin Hoey explains – it is important to remember some of this adjustments can be made in camera if you are shooting jpgs!
