I was delighted to take photos of my neighbours grandchilden for her over Christmas – a chance to try out my new round flash and on the whole I think it works really well, it enables me to move the catch lights where I need them, essential for working with young and active children and to help control the light.
It was lovely spending time during their first Christmas with these two cute young men!
Poinsettia is a plant that I associate with Christmas, so almongst the fun of Christmas Day photos, unwrapping presents, sharing moments with family and friends… I thought I would share a photo of Christmas cheer….
To help with the festive mood I visited a nearby market town to enjoy the Christmas carols organised by the Romsey Lions Club, I had my DSLR but no one really had a camera so instead I opted for hubby’s new camera and a scene mode – which meant it only capture the photos in jpg.
I converted them into black and white in Lightroom to add a more timeless feel.
The scene mode used a very shallow aperture to take a series of quick photos at a range of exposures and then processed them together in camera – it enabled me to take some atmospheric record shots of a very busy event.
I just had to send homemade Christmas cards to some of my family and friends that have been reading my 365… so this year I made my own, back in November, when I discovered the company that I use to make my cards with had a 20% off sale. I was not quite ready for to get into the Christmas spirit at that point, but it had to be done … I dug into my box of Christmas decorations and hunted out my favorite “the snowmen”. We have always had a snowman hung on our tree since we were first married – 19 plus years ago…
Christmas is approaching quicker than I would like but as the Christmas tree is now up, it was time to take a Christmas selfie… I saw a great tutorial online using a Christmas tree and thought I would try and create similar….
I had my camera, a darken lounge lit only by the Christmas tree, my tripod, nifty 50 lens.
Having white Christmas Tree lights makes rather boring Bokeh! My idea was to add me to the image – so focusing the camera in the dark was to be a challenge, I had the idea that I wanted to include a story book and me … so I used the book to hold my iphone, and used the light on my phone to light up my face….
In landscape – I was not really including enough of the book…. as I could not move the camera back any further… it was time to compose the shot on a different direction….
The torch light is not as bright – but it was the shot that I was going for… the rest of the image I had visualised in my head in photoshop… I took this is manual – ISO100, F1.8, 1/10sec. There are two different shades of light though – a yellow tint from the Iphone and bright white from the LED Christmas Lights.
I toned down the yellow on my face, added some Christmas magic coming from the book and presented it in a square format as I wanted it as a social media profile photo. The light is a little harsh still on my face … but it is the right idea and I would love to take a photo like this with a child reading a book by the Christmas tree.
